Your Website Secuirty…
Here we have a closer look on website security and how you can protect your website.
Making sure that your website is protected is highly important yet there are still so many people who think they will not be at risk. So many people say “but why would someone want to hack my website- it won’t happen to me” yet this is still such a big thing that happens.
There are lots of different things which you can do to ensure your website doesn’t get hacked and here’s just a few of them:
One of the first ones is to always read your hosting package from the company who is hosting your website. You need to be aware of what you get in each one before making the big decision of who to go with.
Usually, the cheaper hosting packages means less support from the provider which means it is more down to you the customer yourself to make sure your website is keeping safe.
If this is something you’re not keen on then we would recommend you upgrade your hosting package.
Using complex and strong passwords on the back of your website is one of the best ways to keep your website safe from hacking. We recommend you don’t have your password to have anything to do with your website for example company name or phone number. We recommend it is something completely random and unique and that you change your password regularly.
We would recommend that you don’t use the same password for everything, for your website, your emails and social media should all have different passwords. You usually find once you have been hacked once it usually happens twice but on a different platform if you are using the same password.
It is recommended that each password should be longer than 8 characters, it should upper and lower case letters, with numbers and symbols.
Another important factor about keeping your website from being hacked is keeping your website up to date. Usually, there is a new update for the platform on your website every 3-4 weeks so it is important to watch out for these and as soon as there is one out you need to update it.
Updating your website is the same as updating the software on your phone every time there is a new update. It helps to keep the site protected. Running on the most up to date version on either your website or your phone isn’t necessary it’s a must.
Usually updating your website is also included in your hosting package if you pay only a few pounds a month then it is more than likely again that this is something you should be watching out for yourself, but if you pay a few more then it is more than likely included, but it’s always good to check.
One of the main reasons that website’s get hacked is because of the vulnerability in the framework and platform on which a website is built. WordPress is not only one of the easiest platforms there is to use but it is also one of the most secure platforms of websites to be built on as long as it is hosted, supported and maintained as it should be.
You should also make sure that your website has an SSL certificate, now you must be wondering why?
An SSL certificate protects all of your sensitive information such as credit card information, usernames, passwords, but also an SSL certificate does the following:
Keeps data secure between servers, increases your Google rankings, builds/enhances customer trust and improves conversion rates.
Not only is it good to have in your website but from July this year Google Chrome, the most used browser in the UK has started to mark all websites without an SSL certificate as ‘insecure’ which is not a good look for a website.
Make sure you keep on top of good passwords, websites being updated and having an SSL certificate to keep on top of and to beat all of those hackers.
If you are unsure or worried about any of the above then please don’t hesitate to give us a shout, we are always more than welcome to give you a hand.
